US Senator Adam Schiff has been a vocal opponent of Kash Patel’s appointment as FBI director, describing him as unfit for the position due to his lack of integrity and professionalism. Despite strong resistance from Democrats, the Senate confirmed Patel’s nomination on Thursday, granting him leadership over the nation’s top law enforcement agency.
Earlier in the day, several Democratic members of the Senate Judiciary Committee held a demonstration outside FBI headquarters, making a final attempt to prevent Patel’s confirmation. Schiff, a senator from California, expressed serious concerns about Patel’s qualifications, claiming that even some Republicans doubted his suitability. He accused Patel of being one of the few willing to cross ethical and legal boundaries during Donald Trump’s presidency.
Schiff’s outspoken criticism has fueled speculation that he may be added to the “enemies” list mentioned in Patel’s 2023 book Government Gangsters. In response to Schiff’s comments, Patel lashed out, calling him “the worst criminal in Congress in the last 250 years.” Tech billionaire Elon Musk echoed these remarks, also referring to Schiff as a “criminal.”
Who Is Adam Schiff?
Born in Framingham, Massachusetts, Adam Schiff was raised in California, where he attended Monte Vista High School in Danville. He later earned a degree from Stanford University and a law degree from Harvard Law School.
After completing his education, Schiff worked as a law clerk for Judge William Matthew Byrne Jr. in Los Angeles before becoming a federal prosecutor. During his time at the US Attorney’s Office, he successfully prosecuted Richard Miller, the first FBI agent convicted of spying for Russia. He also played a key role in establishing a federal environmental crimes unit.
In 1996, Schiff was elected to the California State Senate as its youngest member. During his tenure, he co-authored the Schiff-Cardenas Juvenile Justice Crime Prevention Act of 2000, which funded programs aimed at reducing youth incarceration. His dedication to expanding public transit, particularly the Metro Gold Line, earned him the nickname “Father of the Gold Line.”
Elected to the US House of Representatives in 2000, Schiff served on several important committees, including Judiciary, Foreign Affairs, and Intelligence. As chair of the House Intelligence Committee, he led the first impeachment inquiry against then-President Donald Trump and was a vocal advocate for investigating Russian interference in US elections. Schiff also supported imposing sanctions on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.
Schiff’s pursuit of investigations into Trump’s administration made him a controversial figure, especially among Republicans. In 2023, the House voted to censure him for allegedly promoting false claims, though he denied any misconduct.
In 2024, Schiff was elected to the US Senate, representing California.
Throughout his career, Schiff has championed various legislative initiatives, including leading the effort to have Congress formally recognize the Armenian Genocide in 2019. He also sponsored the Protecting Our Democracy Act, a bill designed to prevent presidential overreach.
