Pope Francis’ condition is serious, doctors fear dangerous blood infection

Pope Francis’ condition worsened on Saturday and he is now struggling to breathe due to a long-standing asthmatic breathing problem. The Vatican said in a statement that Francis has been hospitalized for a week with a lung infection and tests have revealed he has anemia.

Francis (88) was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on February 14 for treatment after suffering from bronchitis and on Tuesday doctors diagnosed pneumonia in both his lungs. Along with this, a polymicrobial infection was also found in his windpipe. Doctors have said that Francis’ condition is very serious and his condition is by no means out of danger.

He warned that the main risk to Francis would be the onset of sepsis, a serious blood infection. The pope’s medical team said there were no signs of sepsis as of Friday and that Francis was responding to the various medications he was taking.

Doctors said that due to difficulty in breathing, high flow of oxygen had to be given. Apart from this, platelet count was also low in the test. In such a situation, blood transfusion was necessary. It was announced two days ago in Watkin that the Pope will not be able to attend the prayers for the people coming on Sunday. His condition has been very bad for two weeks and he has not been able to attend the prayers.
