Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has vowed to retaliate against the United States’ broad tariffs on Canadian imports, calling it a “trade war” that will ultimately hurt American families the most. While emphasizing that Canadians are “reasonable” and “polite,” Trudeau made it clear that they will not back down when the nation’s economy is at risk.
Speaking from Parliament Hill on Tuesday, Trudeau criticized US President Donald Trump’s decision, calling tariffs a “very dumb thing to do.” He also questioned why Trump would choose to work with Russian President Vladimir Putin—whom Trudeau described as a “murderer and dictator”—while simultaneously imposing tariffs on Canada, a longtime ally and trade partner.
“Today, the United States has launched a trade war against Canada—its closest ally and friend,” Trudeau said.
Canada Responds with 25% Tariffs
In response, Canada will impose 25% tariffs on $155 billion worth of US goods. The first wave, amounting to $30 billion, will take effect immediately, while the remaining $125 billion will be implemented over the next 21 days. Additionally, Trudeau announced plans to challenge the US tariffs at the World Trade Organization (WTO), arguing that they violate free trade agreements between the two countries.
Trudeau also addressed the American public, warning that these tariffs would lead to inflation and job losses in industries dependent on Canadian materials and consumers. He urged Trump to reconsider, stating that both nations should collaborate to ensure “prosperity for North Americans.”
“They have chosen to sabotage their own agenda,” Trudeau stated. “There is absolutely no justification for these tariffs today.”
Support for Canadians Affected by the Trade War
To help those impacted by the trade dispute, the Canadian government has announced measures to support workers and businesses. Trudeau reassured Canadians that the government would “relentlessly fight” to protect the economy.
Trudeau also rejected Trump’s claims that Canada is not doing enough to combat the fentanyl crisis, calling the accusation “completely false.”
Trudeau Rejects US Annexation Claims
Additionally, Trudeau accused Trump of wanting to see Canada’s economy collapse to make it easier to annex the country. He firmly dismissed this idea, stating, “Canada will never be the 51st state.”
Trudeau, who has served as Canada’s Prime Minister since 2015, is set to step down as leader of the governing Liberal Party on Sunday.
“We are Canadians,” he declared. “We are going to fight, and we are going to win.”
