In February, President Trump had said his administration would “soon” impose retaliatory tariffs on countries like India and China, a statement he had also made during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US last month. Trump has made it clear to Prime Minister Modi that India will not be spared from US retaliatory tariffs and asserted that no one can argue with him on the tariff structure.
During this, Trump said that he wanted to implement the retaliatory tariff from April 1, but then due to ‘April Fool’, he will implement it from April 2. Trump said, “I wanted to implement it on April 1, but I did not want to be accused of April Fool’s Day. This will cost us a lot one day, but still we are going to do it on April 2. I am a very superstitious person.” Trump said that these tariffs are to make America rich and great again. He further said that this step is being taken to protect the interests of American farmers, manufacturers and workers, who have been affected by unbalanced trade policies for a long time.
