US President Donald Trump has expressed appreciation for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s willingness to negotiate peace with Russia and sign a minerals deal with the United States.
Trump’s Remarks on Ukraine Peace Talks
Speaking before Congress, Trump revealed that he had received a letter from Zelenskyy stating that Ukraine is prepared to engage in peace negotiations as soon as possible. Quoting from the letter, Trump said, “Nobody wants peace more than the Ukrainians.”
The letter also reaffirmed Ukraine’s gratitude for US support, with Zelenskyy writing, “We do really value how much America has done to help Ukraine maintain its sovereignty and independence.” Trump emphasized that his administration was “ready to work under strong leadership to secure a lasting peace.”
Additionally, Trump claimed that his administration had been in “serious discussions with Russia” and had received “strong signals that they are ready for peace.”
“Wouldn’t that be beautiful?” Trump asked. “It’s time to stop this madness. It’s time to halt the killing. It’s time to end this senseless war. If you want to end wars, you have to talk to both sides.”
The remarks signaled a slight shift in Trump’s stance on Ukraine following his contentious White House meeting with Zelenskyy, after which he ordered a pause on all US military aid to Kyiv. However, Trump did not provide further details on his plans for resolving the conflict.
Trump Declares Intent to Take Control of Greenland
In the same speech, Trump escalated his rhetoric on territorial ambitions, stating that the US would “take control of Greenland one way or another.” He asserted that the territory, currently controlled by Denmark, is critical for both “national security and international security.”
“I think we’re going to get it—one way or the other, we’re going to get it,” Trump declared.
He also directly addressed the people of Greenland, saying, “We strongly support your right to determine your own future. And if you choose, we welcome you into the United States of America.”
“We will keep you safe. We will make you rich,” he added.
Reclaiming the Panama Canal
Trump also announced efforts to “reclaim” the Panama Canal, citing a recent acquisition of two ports near the canal by the US-based firm BlackRock from a China-headquartered company. He reiterated his belief that the canal, which was built by Americans, should be under US control.
“We didn’t give it to China; we gave it to Panama, and we’re taking it back,” Trump stated.
He also took a jab at Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who recently visited Panama on a diplomatic tour. “We have Marco Rubio in charge,” Trump quipped. “Good luck, Marco. Now we know who to blame if anything goes wrong.”
Tariffs and Foreign Policy Moves
During his speech, Trump defended recent trade policies, including new tariffs imposed on Mexico and Canada, which Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had criticized as “a very dumb thing to do.”
The remarks underscored Trump’s aggressive approach to foreign policy, signaling potential shifts in US alliances and global strategy.
