FIFA Bans Former Gabon Youth Coach Patrick Assoumou Eyi for Life Over Sexual Abuse

FIFA has permanently banned former Gabon youth-team coach Patrick Assoumou Eyi, known as “Capello,” after its ethics committee found him guilty of repeated sexual abuse against multiple players.

Eyi, who stepped down as Gabon’s U-17 head coach in 2017, admitted to charges of rape, grooming, and exploitation of young players. Allegations against him first surfaced in 2021, with claims that he lured victims to his home, which he referred to as the “Garden of Eden.”

FIFA provisionally suspended Eyi when the accusations emerged in 2021, prompting an independent ethics committee investigation. On Tuesday, FIFA confirmed his lifetime ban from all football-related activities and imposed a fine of 1 million Swiss francs (£878,000).

“The investigation into Mr. Eyi concerns complaints from at least four male football players who accused him of sexual abuse between 2006 and 2021. Most of these incidents occurred while the players were minors,” FIFA stated.
