Vatican City: Pope Francis spent a peaceful night in the hospital, the Vatican announced on Monday, as the 88-year-old pontiff continues his recovery after more than three weeks of hospitalization.
The leader of the Catholic Church, which has nearly 1.4 billion followers worldwide, has shown slight signs of improvement, responding positively to treatment for pneumonia, according to the Vatican’s weekend update.
“The Pope spent a quiet night, he is resting,” the Vatican stated in its Monday morning bulletin.
On Sunday, Pope Francis was unable to personally deliver the traditional Angelus prayer following mass at St. Peter’s Basilica. However, he issued a written message expressing gratitude to his doctors and healthcare workers.
“I too experience the thoughtfulness of service and the tenderness of care, in particular from the doctors and healthcare workers, whom I thank from the bottom of my heart,” he wrote.
The pope has not made any public appearances since his admission to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on February 14, where he is receiving treatment in a special papal suite.
