Gaza Fisherman Turn Refrigerator Doors into Makeshift Boat Amid War

Balancing carefully on what was once a refrigerator door, Palestinian fisherman Khaled Habib paddles through the waters of Gaza City’s fishing port using a handmade oar.

More than 15 months of relentless Israeli bombardment in the war between Israel and Hamas have devastated the harbor, destroying nearly all the boats and leaving local fishermen without a way to make a living.

“We’re in a very difficult situation today, struggling with fishing. There are no boats left—they’ve all been destroyed and tossed on the ground,” Habib told AFP.

Determined to continue providing for his family, Habib ingeniously transformed discarded refrigerator doors into a floating raft by stuffing them with cork for buoyancy. He reinforced one side with wood and covered the other with plastic sheeting to keep it waterproof.

With fishing nets scarce, he also crafted a fishing cage out of wire, though he admitted that his catches remain small.

Despite the harsh conditions, Habib’s resourcefulness is a testament to the resilience of Gaza’s fishermen, who continue to fight for survival amid the ongoing conflict.
