Trump hugged PM Modi and made several big announcements

US President Donald Trump met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday and promised to bring fairness and reciprocity to the economic relationship between the two countries. Trump said this would mean the US would work to reduce its trade deficit and tariffs could be raised to achieve this. The two leaders met in a very warm atmosphere.
Trump said the US and India would begin talks to increase trade in the coming weeks, but also indicated that US tariffs on goods coming from India could increase. “Whatever tariffs India imposes, we will impose the same tariffs,” Trump said. “It doesn’t really matter to us anymore what they charge. We really want a level playing field,” he added.

Prime Minister Modi praised Trump and said that he is committed to making India great again. Let us tell you that during his election, the US President had given the slogan “Make America Great Again”.

Additionally, Trump supported the extradition of the perpetrators of the 2008 Mumbai attacks to India. Trump said, “That man will go back to India and face justice there.” He named Tahawar Hussain Rana, who was convicted in the US in 2011 of plotting to attack a Danish newspaper.

Trump and Modi greeted each other with a hug in the West Wing lobby and then held a meeting in the Oval Office. During this, Trump called Modi his “great friend.”

India is set to reduce its tariffs on goods imported from the US. In 2023, duties on some US-imported products like Harley Davidson motorcycles were reduced from 50% to 40%. Along with this, India also removed retaliatory duties on American almonds, apples, chickpeas, pulses and walnuts.
