A tragic knife attack occurred in Villach, southern Austria, on Saturday, resulting in the death of a 14-year-old boy and injuries to four others. The police reported that a 23-year-old Syrian asylum seeker was arrested at the scene shortly after the incident, which took place around 4 PM local time near the city’s central square.
According to police spokesman Rainer Dionisio, the assailant randomly attacked passersby with a knife. The victims included two teenagers aged 16, who suffered serious injuries, while the other two injured individuals were aged 28 and 32, sustaining minor wounds. Two of the injured are currently in critical condition.
The attack was interrupted by a food delivery driver who witnessed the assault and intervened by colliding his vehicle with the attacker, helping to prevent further harm. The suspect was apprehended without resistance by police officers shortly after this intervention.
Authorities are investigating the motive behind the attack and whether the suspect acted alone. Initial reports did not indicate any links to terrorism, and further inquiries are ongoing to determine if there were any accomplices involved.
