The San Francisco Police Department has officially closed the investigation into the death of Suchir Balaji, a former OpenAI employee and whistleblower, confirming that he died by suicide. This conclusion follows a thorough autopsy report released by the San Francisco County Medical Examiner, which stated that Balaji, 26, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head on November 26, 2024.
Despite the findings, Balaji’s family has expressed skepticism regarding the investigation. His mother, Poornima Ramarao, has publicly questioned the police’s handling of the case, citing a lack of CCTV footage from the building and the absence of a suicide note. She has called for a more transparent investigation and has indicated that they may pursue further legal action.
The autopsy report detailed that Balaji was found alone in his bathroom with his apartment door locked from the inside. There were no signs of forced entry or struggle, and evidence indicated that he had recently researched brain anatomy on his computer. The firearm used was registered in Balaji’s name, and gunshot residue was found on both hands.
Balaji’s death garnered significant media attention due to his role as a whistleblower who raised concerns about OpenAI’s alleged use of copyrighted material in training its AI models. Just days before his death, he had been identified in a court filing related to ongoing lawsuits against OpenAI concerning copyright issues.
