Who is Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani?
Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani was born in 1980 to Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the former Emir of Qatar. In 2003, his elder brother Sheikh Jassim gave up his claim to the throne, after which Sheikh Tamim was declared the official heir. In 2013, his father abdicated, after which Sheikh Tamim became the Emir of Qatar. He was educated at the prestigious Harrow School in London and later received military training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. After graduating in 1998, he returned to Qatar and joined the army as a second lieutenant.
He was immediately appointed as the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Qatar Armed Forces after being declared the successor in 2003. Subsequently, he played a key role in Qatar’s security and economic policies and proved his future leadership potential.

Sheikh Tamim is one of the richest rulers in the world. According to Forbes, he is the eighth richest king in the world. His personal wealth is estimated to be around $2.4 billion (Rs 20,000 crores). The Al Thani family’s total wealth is around $335 billion (Rs 28 lakh crores), making them one of the wealthiest royal families in the world.
Sheikh Tamim and his family live in the magnificent Royal Palace in Doha, which is said to be decorated with gold. This huge property has 15 palaces and parking for more than 500 cars. In 2019, he built another magnificent palace in Oman, which is similar in grandeur to the Royal Palace of Doha.

Sheikh Tamim, who is fond of luxury lifestyle, owns one of the world’s largest and expensive yachts called ‘The Qatara’. The 124-meter long yacht is estimated to be worth around $400 million (Rs 3,300 crore). It has a helicopter pad and multiple decks that can accommodate up to 35 guests and 90 crew members. His royal family owns an exclusive private airline called Qatar Amiri Flight, which has 14 luxurious aircraft. Three of which are Boeing 747-8 models, each of which is said to cost more than $400 million.
Fondness for expensive cars and football club
Sheikh Tamim has a huge collection of rare and expensive cars like Bugatti Divo, Veyron and Chiron, La Ferrari Aperta, Lamborghini Centenario, Mercedes AMG 6×6 and Rolls Royce Phantom. The Qatar royal family are big fans of sports. Sheikh Tamim founded Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) in 2004. In 2011 QSI bought France’s prestigious football club ‘Paris Saint-Germain’ (PSG). Recently, in October 2023, QSI acquired a 21.7% stake in Portugal’s top football club SC Braga.
