President Donald Trump has appointed Alice Marie Johnson as the administration’s “pardon czar,” tasking her with recommending individuals for presidential commutations.
During a Black History Month event at the White House last Thursday, Trump praised Johnson—who was granted clemency during his first term—as “an inspiration to people.”
Trump commuted her sentence on June 6, 2018, and later granted her a full pardon on August 28, 2020.
Before her release, Johnson, now 69, had served over 20 years in federal prison for a first-time, nonviolent drug offense.
In her new role, Johnson is expected to advocate for individuals seeking clemency, continuing her work in criminal justice reform.
