The incidents of attacks on Indian students in America are not stopping. In the latest case, a student from Ranga Reddy district of Telangana has been shot dead. The deceased has been identified as G. Praveen (26), who was studying MS in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and also had a part-time job in a store. The incident took place early Wednesday (Indian time), after which the US authorities informed Praveen’s family about it.
The victim’s father, Raghavulu, said he received a WhatsApp call from his son at 5 am, but he could not pick up the phone. “Later in the morning, I saw the missed call and sent him a voice message. However, there was no call back even after an hour. Then I called his number, but someone else picked up the call. I got suspicious and disconnected the call, thinking something might have happened,” he said. “When I contacted his friends, they told me that they had received information that he had gone to a shop for a part-time job, and during the robbery, the robbers opened fire. One bullet hit him and he died,” he said.
Moreover, Praveen’s cousin Arun said that some of his friends reported that Praveen’s body was found riddled with bullets. However, some people say that he was killed by unknown assailants in a store, but the exact cause of death is not yet known. US officials told the family that the cause of death will be clear only after the post-mortem report.
Praveen had completed his BTech in Hyderabad and went to the US for MS in 2023. He came to India in December last year and returned to the US in January 2025. As soon as the news of the incident was received, a wave of grief ran through the family. Arun said that Praveen had called his father a few hours before the incident, but he was sleeping, so the conversation could not take place.
This is not the first murder of a student from Telangana in America. This is the third incident in the last five months. A student from Khammam district was also shot dead in November 2024 and a student from Hyderabad was shot dead in January 2025. These incidents have raised serious questions about the safety of Indian students studying and working in America.
