Gave a blunt answer; Jordan also said clearly
US President Donald Trump’s Gaza plan has sparked a sharp reaction in the Arab world. Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit and Jordan’s King Abdullah II have strongly rejected the plan. Arab League Secretary General Aboul Gheit told the World Government Summit in Dubai that the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza and the West Bank is unacceptable for the Arab region. “The Arab world has been fighting this idea for the past 100 years,” he said. In this regard, Jordan’s King Abdullah II also made it clear in his meeting with Trump that his country would not accept any attempt to displace Palestinians. However, on humanitarian grounds he offered to shelter 2,000 sick children from Gaza.
Trump’s Gaza plan has sparked controversy
His statement comes after Donald Trump recently proposed that the US could take control of Gaza and develop it as a luxury tourist destination. Arab countries feel that his plan is based on dispossessing Palestinians from their land, which Arab countries have completely rejected. “We will take control of Gaza and take it over,” Trump said during a meeting with Jordan’s King Abdullah. However, he also made it clear that he would not personally undertake any real estate projects there.
King Abdullah tried to persuade Trump by saying that Egypt was preparing a comprehensive plan on the issue, which would be discussed further. “We should wait to see what Egypt proposes, and then we will discuss it in Riyadh,” he said. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi also supported the reconstruction of Gaza, but categorically rejected the displacement of Palestinians.
Will Trump pressure Jordan?
Jordan receives about $750 million in economic aid and $350 million in military aid from the US every year. It is being said that Trump may put pressure on Jordan and other Arab countries by threatening to stop this aid. However, King Abdullah indicated that his country’s stance will remain firm. Now all eyes are on the upcoming Riyadh meeting, where Arab countries will decide their common strategy on this controversial proposal of Trump.
