Australia and New Zealand are closely monitoring the presence of a group of Chinese naval vessels spotted in international waters off Australia’s eastern coast, according to the defence ministers of both countries.Last week, three Chinese navy ships—a frigate, a cruiser, and a supply tanker—were observed in waters off mainland Australia. Since then, the vessels have continued their route along Australia’s eastern coast, now located approximately 150 nautical miles (278 km) east of Sydney.Australia’s Defence Minister Richard Marles stated, “We are keeping a close watch on them and ensuring we are monitoring their movements.” While acknowledging the event was unusual, he emphasized, “It’s not unprecedented,” and reassured that the ships posed “no threat” as they were operating in accordance with international law.He further explained, “Just as they have a right to be in international waters, we have a right to be vigilant and ensure they are being surveilled, which is exactly what we are doing.”
