Canada : 5 former prime ministers say fly the maple leaf on Saturday to stand up to Trump

In response to perceived threats from U.S. President Donald Trump, all living former Canadian prime ministers are encouraging Canadians to display the red maple leaf flag this weekend as a show of national pride. Joe Clark, Kim Campbell, Jean Chrétien, Paul Martin, and Stephen Harper have collectively penned an open letter urging Canadians to “show the flag as never before” in the face of “threats and insults from Donald Trump”.

The former prime ministers stated, “Let’s fly our flag with pride. Let’s show the world that we are proud of our history and proud of our country”. They added that despite past challenges, they “all agree on one thing: Canada, the true north, strong and free, the best country in the world, is worth celebrating and fighting for”.
This weekend marks the 60th anniversary of the flag, which was first raised on Parliament Hill on February 15, 196529. National Flag of Canada Day is observed annually on February . Instituted in 1996, the day is marked by flying the flag and educational programs in schools.
The former prime ministers also noted that they “witnessed a surge of Canadian pride and patriotism” following Trump’s remarks, and are heartened to see so many people “come together to express their love for our country and their determination to defend Canada’s values and our independence”.
