Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has requested broad access to the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) systems, including the Integrated Data Retrieval System (IDRS), which contains detailed financial data on millions of American taxpayers. As of Sunday evening, the request had not been granted.

DOGE’s Request DOGE, led by Elon Musk, is seeking access to the IRS’s Integrated Data Retrieval System (IDRS). The IDRS provides IRS staff with “instantaneous visual access to certain taxpayer accounts” for reviewing tax information, issuing notices, and updating records.
Purpose DOGE, established under President Donald Trump, aims to eliminate wasteful government spending. The White House defends DOGE’s efforts, stating that direct access to the system is needed to identify and fix waste, fraud, and abuse in government spending.
Concerns The request has sparked alarm within the government and among privacy experts. Granting DOGE access to private financial data could pose serious risks, including identity theft and privacy violations. Elizabeth Laird, a former state privacy officer with the Center for Democracy and Technology, says people share sensitive information with the government under the understanding that it will be used legally and securely.
IRS Response The IRS is reportedly considering a memorandum of understanding to grant DOGE personnel limited access to tax-agency systems, including the IDRS. Access to the IDRS is extremely restricted, as anyone with access could alter transaction data and generate financial records.
Musk’s Defense Musk has asserted that some federal employees have amassed considerable wealth exceeding their official salaries. He told reporters, “We do find it rather odd that there are quite a few people in the bureaucracy who have ostensibly a salary of a few hundred thousand dollars, but somehow managed to accrue tens of millions of dollars in net worth while they are in that position … We’re just curious as to where it came from”.
Previous Attempts DOGE previously sought access to the Treasury Department’s Bureau of Fiscal Services, which manages the country’s payment system, but was denied access following legal challenges.
DOGE Operative Gavin Kliger, a DOGE-affiliated software engineer, may be granted access to the IRS’ systems for 120 days to provide “engineering assistance and IT modernization consulting”.
Transparency When questioned about checks to ensure Musk is not using accessed data to his advantage, Musk insisted DOGE posts all activity on its website to ensure maximal transparency.
