Haitian security forces have launched a large-scale operation in a gang-controlled shantytown in Port-au-Prince, targeting the stronghold of notorious gang leader Jimmy Chérizier, also known as “Barbecue.”
Heavy Clashes in Lower Delmas
Authorities confirmed that several gang members were killed in the operation, which took place in the Lower Delmas area. Local reports suggest that military drones carrying explosives were deployed to assist in the assault.
Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé commended the operation, stating that it was led by a newly created special task force dedicated to restoring security.
Barbecue’s Grip on Port-au-Prince
Chérizier, 47, is the leader of Viv Ansam (Live Together), a coalition of gangs that wields significant power across the Haitian capital. His group is one of several armed factions responsible for widespread violence, leading to lawlessness, collapsing public services, and a growing humanitarian crisis.
International Forces and Rising Violence
It remains unclear whether Kenyan police officers deployed last year as part of the Multinational Security Support mission are involved in the latest raid. The mission suffered a setback last week when a Kenyan officer was killed during a clash with gang members.
With gang violence surging, more than 5,500 people have been killed in Haiti this year alone, and over a million residents have been forced to flee their homes.
Political Deadlock and Uncertainty
Despite efforts to restore democratic order, Haiti’s transitional presidential council has made little progress in organizing long-delayed elections. As gangs tighten their grip on the capital, the security situation remains dire, with no immediate resolution in sight.
