French President Emmanuel Macron has expressed deep concern over the imprisonment and health of Boualem Sansal, a French-Algerian author currently on a hunger strike in Algeria.
Pen America, an advocacy group, has urged Sansal’s immediate release, warning that his hunger strike poses serious risks to his wellbeing. The 75-year-old writer was arrested in November on national security charges and later hospitalized. Prominent literary figures, including Salman Rushdie and Annie Ernaux, have called for his freedom.
Macron criticized Algeria’s actions in a recent speech, stating that Sansal’s detention remains a significant obstacle to restoring trust between the two nations. Tensions between France and Algeria have escalated due to disputes over immigration policies and Western Sahara’s sovereignty.
Sansal’s arrest is linked to comments he made in a far-right French outlet, where he suggested Morocco’s territorial boundaries were altered under French colonial rule to benefit Algeria. His stance on Islam has also made him a controversial figure, with support from right-wing circles and criticism from leftist politicians.
