Mass Flight Cancellations as German Airport Workers Stage One-Day Strike
A 24-hour strike by workers at 13 major German airports, including the key hubs of Frankfurt and Munich, brought air travel to a standstill on Monday, leading to the cancellation of most scheduled flights.
The walkout, which began at midnight, involves public-sector employees, ground staff, and security personnel. According to German news agency dpa, Frankfurt Airport alone saw 1,054 of its 1,116 scheduled takeoffs and landings cancelled.
Berlin Airport halted all regular departures and arrivals, while Hamburg Airport confirmed no departures would be possible. Cologne/Bonn Airport suspended regular passenger services, and Munich Airport warned travelers of a drastically reduced flight schedule.
The strike, organized by the ver.di service workers union, also affected airports in Bremen, Hannover, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Leipzig/Halle, Stuttgart, and Munich. At the smaller airports of Weeze and Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden, only security workers were called to strike.
As negotiations between the union and employers continue, travelers across Germany face major disruptions, with authorities urging passengers to check with their airlines before heading to the airport.
