Michelle Trachtenberg, the beloved actor known for her roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gossip Girl, has passed away at the age of 39, according to US media reports.
Authorities responded to an emergency call at her Manhattan apartment around 8:00 a.m. local time on Wednesday, The New York Times reported. She was found unconscious and unresponsive, and emergency medical personnel pronounced her dead at the scene. Police have ruled out foul play but did not disclose a cause of death.
According to ABC News, citing anonymous sources, Trachtenberg had recently undergone a liver transplant and may have experienced complications.
Born in New York, Trachtenberg began her career as a child star, gaining recognition in Harriet the Spy (1996) alongside Rosie O’Donnell. She also starred in Nickelodeon’s The Adventures of Pete & Pete.
Her breakthrough role came in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (2000-2003), where she portrayed Dawn Summers, the younger sister of Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Buffy. She later gained further fame playing the scheming socialite Georgina Sparks on Gossip Girl (2008-2012).
Trachtenberg’s film credits include EuroTrip, 17 Again, and The Scribbler. She also made guest appearances on shows like Weeds and Mercy, with her final credited role in the 2022 Gossip Girl reboot.
