New Canada Rules To Cancel Temporary Resident Documents

On February 12, 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced updates to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations, set to reinforce the authority to cancel temporary resident documents. These amended regulations, which took effect on January 31, 2025, empower immigration and border services officers to cancel electronic travel authorizations (eTAs) and temporary resident visas (TRVs) on a case-by-case basis.
Reasons for cancellation may include:
A change in a person’s status or circumstances that makes them inadmissible or no longer eligible. This includes instances where false information was provided, there’s a criminal history, or the person is deceased.
An officer is not satisfied that someone will leave Canada by the end of their authorized stay.
The document is lost, stolen, destroyed, or abandoned.
The individual has transitioned to permanent residency.
The document was granted due to an administrative mistake.
These changes are intended to enhance the integrity of Canada’s temporary residence programs and are expected to strengthen security at the border and within Canada. The IRCC says it will continue to improve processes and invest in tools to secure Canada’s borders and protect the immigration system.
