Nirmala Sitharaman Meets Former UK PM Rishi Sunak

New Delhi:
Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman, met with former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in Delhi on Tuesday. Their discussions focused on exploring new opportunities to strengthen market-based financial ties and drive economic growth.

During the meeting, Sitharaman emphasized the importance of leveraging the Commonwealth to bring mutual concerns to the G7 agenda, aiming to benefit the Global South.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had reaffirmed India’s commitment to advocating for the Global South at an Outreach session of the G7 summit held in Italy’s Apulia region in June. He stressed that these nations are disproportionately affected by global uncertainties and tensions.

PM Modi specifically highlighted India’s efforts in making the African Union a permanent member of the G-20 during India’s presidency, giving the Global South a stronger voice in global decision-making.

Additionally, the Prime Minister called for ending technological monopolies by advanced nations and emphasized the need for international governance in AI. He underscored India’s leadership in artificial intelligence (AI), noting that India was among the first countries to develop a national AI strategy and launch the AI Mission under the vision of ‘AI for All’.

PM Modi also outlined India’s energy principles, focusing on availability, accessibility, affordability, and acceptability. He reiterated India’s commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070 and urged collective global efforts toward a sustainable future.

Sitharaman’s meeting with Rishi Sunak follows another high-level discussion held on Monday between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and the former UK Prime Minister.

Jaishankar shared a post on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Nice to meet former UK PM @RishiSunak in Delhi today. Appreciate his constant support for strengthening India-UK relations.” He also shared some photographs from their meeting.
