Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Russia on May 9 to attend the Victory Day parade at Moscow’s Red Square, commemorating the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The report, published by Russian news agency TASS, cites a military source indicating a “high probability” of the visit.
According to the source, discussions are also underway regarding the participation of a ceremonial unit from the Indian armed forces in the parade. If approved, the personnel would be required to arrive in Russia at least a month in advance for rehearsals. Additionally, arrangements for their travel and logistics are currently being worked out.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov recently confirmed that multiple invited countries have agreed to participate in the May 9 celebrations. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov also emphasized that leaders from various nations, including those outside the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), are welcome, highlighting the significance of Victory Day for Russia.
PM Modi last visited Russia in October 2023 for the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin. If the visit materializes, it will take place amid ongoing diplomatic negotiations between US and Russian officials aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine. Talks began earlier this month in Riyadh, and PM Modi has previously advocated for peace in his meetings with both President Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
