Pope Francis “slept all night” and remains under rest, the Vatican said, following two episodes of acute respiratory failure that required medical intervention.
Ongoing Health Challenges
The 88-year-old pontiff, who has been hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli hospital for over two weeks, is battling pneumonia in both lungs. His condition worsened due to a significant buildup of mucus in his airways, leading to bronchospasms and breathing difficulties. The pope has resumed non-invasive mechanical ventilation to aid his breathing, with further updates expected soon.
This latest setback follows a severe bronchospasm on Friday and a prolonged breathing crisis on February 22, which required blood transfusions for a low platelet count.
Long-Term Health Struggles
Francis has a history of respiratory issues, having lost part of a lung due to pleurisy as a young man in Argentina. His health challenges have become more frequent in recent years, including hospitalization for pneumonia in 2023 and a colon surgery in 2021. He also struggles with sciatic nerve pain and a knee condition, often requiring a wheelchair.
Support and Prayers
Nightly vigils for the pope’s health continue at St. Peter’s Basilica and outside Gemelli Hospital, as well as in cities across Italy and beyond.
Despite his hospitalization, Pope Francis remains engaged with his spiritual duties. Missing his traditional Angelus prayer for the third consecutive Sunday, he instead sent a written message thanking well-wishers for their prayers:
“I feel all your affection and closeness and, at this particular time, I feel as if I am ‘carried’ and supported by all God’s people. Thank you all.”
