Renowned soul singer Angie Stone, best known for her hit Wish I Didn’t Miss You, has passed away at the age of 63 following a fatal car crash in Montgomery, Alabama. A representative confirmed the tragic news, stating that Stone was returning home from a performance when the accident occurred. She was the only fatality in the crash.
Her daughter, Diamond Stone, shared her grief online, writing: “My mommy is gone.”
Stone’s career began in the late 1970s as a founding member of the pioneering female hip-hop group The Sequence. At just 16, she helped create their hit Funk You Up, a track that later influenced artists like Dr. Dre and Bruno Mars. Reflecting on her impact, Stone once said, “Being the first female rap group to have an authentic original rap record is an accomplishment no one else has been able to top.”
After The Sequence disbanded in the mid-1980s, Stone worked as a vocalist for Vertical Hold and Devox, later earning songwriting credits for D’Angelo’s first two albums. She also toured as a backing vocalist for D’Angelo before lending her voice to Lenny Kravitz’s 1998 album 5.
Stone’s solo career took off in 1999 with her debut album Black Diamond, featuring the hits No More Rain (In This Cloud) and Life Story. She later recorded the theme song for the popular sitcom Girlfriends in 2000 before releasing Mahogany Soul in 2001, which included her biggest international success, Wish I Didn’t Miss You.
Her third album, Stone Love, featured the hit I Wanna Thank Ya, a collaboration with Snoop Dogg. The song’s music video also starred a young Idris Elba. Over the years, Stone released a total of ten studio albums, with her most recent, Love Language, arriving in 2023 and featuring Musiq Soulchild and her son, Swayvo Twain.
A three-time Grammy nominee, Stone also penned songs for artists like Erykah Badu and Raphael Saadiq. Despite her success as a singer, she once expressed frustration over the lack of recognition for her songwriting, saying, “People think I make money from records, but I earn far more as a songwriter.”
Beyond music, Stone also pursued acting, with roles in films such as The Hot Chick and The Fighting Temptations. She also took to the stage, starring as Big Mama Morton in Chicago.
Her passing marks a significant loss in the world of soul and R&B music.
