Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit, has joined billionaire Frank McCourt’s effort to acquire TikTok as a strategic adviser. McCourt’s internet advocacy group, Project Liberty, revealed this week that Ohanian, who is also an investor and married to tennis legend Serena Williams, is now part of a consortium called “The People’s Bid for TikTok.”Ohanian announced his involvement in the bid on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “I’m officially now one of the people trying to buy TikTok US—and bring it on-chain.” His comments referenced the use of a decentralized, blockchain-based platform that Project Liberty plans to utilize in order to give users more control over their online data.If successful, Project Liberty aims to redesign TikTok with a focus on privacy, security, and digital independence, making these features foundational rather than optional. When asked by a user on X what he would rename TikTok if his bid succeeds, Ohanian responded, “TikTok: Freedom Edition.”This move comes after a federal bill, signed into law by former President Joe Biden last year, mandates that TikTok sever ties with its China-based parent company, ByteDance, or face a potential ban by January 19.
