Canada’s largest gold heist
The mastermind behind the world’s biggest heist of $20 million (Rs. 1, 73, 33, 67, 000 crore) in Canada, Simran Preet Panesar, has been identified. He lives in a rented house in Chandigarh with his wife Preeti, a former Miss India Uganda, singer and actress. The Canadian police had issued an international arrest warrant against Simran, under which the Chandigarh police have arrested her.
His wife is not involved in the robbery, but a case is pending against both of them in a Canadian court. Simran, 32, a former Air Canada manager, has been wanted in this case since April 2023, as she and her accomplices committed the crime in April 2023. Canadian police were waiting for his surrender because in June last year, his lawyer told the court that he was going to come to Canada and surrender, but the police kept waiting.
what is the matter?
According to the report, 32-year-old Simran had stolen gold and cash worth Rs 173 crore from a flight arriving from Zurich, Switzerland. She carried out the theft at Pearson International Airport in Toronto, Canada. She had stolen 6600 gold bars and foreign currency worth $2.5 million (Rs 21, 66, 70, 875 crore) from the flight’s cargo. While investigating the case, Canadian police scanned more than 40 CCTV cameras and electronic devices.
20 officers conducted 28096 hours of investigation in a year. 9500 hours of overtime were worked, but no trace of Simran was found. However, during the investigation, $4,30,000 in cash, 6 gold bracelets worth $89,000 and casts and molds used to melt the gold were recovered. It has been revealed that these bracelets were made by melting the stolen gold. Canada’s Peel Regional Police is investigating the case under the name of Project 24 Carat.
