Sikh Deportee Describes Horrific Experience in US Detention Center

Davinder Singh, a 21-year-old from Hoshiarpur, Punjab, shares his disturbing experience at a US detention center after being detained for crossing the US border illegally. Singh was part of the second group of 116 Indian immigrants who were deported back to India aboard a military aircraft.

He describes the detention center as a place where basic human rights were ignored, with freezing temperatures, “thin blankets,” and inadequate food.Singh’s journey to the US was a long and dangerous one, passing through Amsterdam, Suriname, Guatemala, and the Panama jungle.

On January 27, he finally crossed the US border, only to be detained by the US Border Patrol. He spent 18 days in detention, during which he witnessed US officials treating Sikh immigrants disrespectfully, including throwing their turbans into the trash. “It was very painful to see turbans being thrown into a dustbin,” Davinder told PTI.

The conditions in the detention center were deplorable. Singh and the other detainees were kept in a hall with insufficient clothing and blankets to endure the freezing temperatures. “When we told them we were cold, they didn’t care at all,” he said. The food provided was also poor. Singh was given a small packet of chips and juice five times a day, along with undercooked bread, half-cooked rice, sweet corn, and cucumber. Although beef was available, Davinder, being a vegetarian, could not eat it. For the entire 18-day stay, he and others were forced to wear the same clothes.
