The one who saves the country does not violate any law: Trump

On Saturday, President Donald Trump invoked Napoleon Bonaparte in a social media post, signaling his continued resistance to limits on his executive authority amidst legal challenges. Trump proclaimed on his Truth Social network, “He who saves his Country does not violate any Law,” a phrase attributed to the French military leader. The White House has not yet responded to requests for more details regarding the statement.

The remark drew immediate criticism, with Senator Adam Schiff calling it dictatorial. Trump, who assumed office on January 20, has made broad assertions of executive power, potentially leading to showdowns with the Supreme Court. Lawsuits have been filed accusing Trump of usurping Congressional authority as defined in the Constitution.

While Trump claims to respect court rulings, his advisors have attacked judges on social media and called for their impeachment. Vice President JD Vance has stated that judges are overstepping by attempting to control the executive’s power. Washington lawyer Norm Eisen, like Schiff a veteran of Trump’s impeachment trials, said that Trump’s lawyers have repeatedly tried to make the argument that actions undertaken by the president cannot be illegal.

Eisen described Trump’s message as a provocation, while Trump has attributed his survival of an assassination attempt to divine will, believing he was spared to save the country.
