Trump Announces Reciprocal Tariffs on India and Other Nations, Effective April 2

US President Donald Trump has once again criticized what he calls “unfair” tariffs imposed by India and other nations, declaring that the US will introduce reciprocal tariffs starting April 2. The new policy aims to match the tariff rates imposed by foreign countries on American exports.

Trump Pushes for Equal Trade Terms

Speaking before a Joint Session of Congress at the start of his second term, Trump emphasized that the US has been at a disadvantage for decades due to higher tariffs imposed by other countries.

“For years, nations like the European Union, China, Brazil, India, Mexico, and Canada have imposed significantly higher tariffs on us. It’s time we respond in kind,” he said.

He specifically pointed to India’s high auto tariffs, stating, “India charges us more than 100% on automobiles. That’s unacceptable.”

New Tariff Strategy Begins April 2

Trump confirmed that the US will impose tariffs equivalent to those charged by other nations.

“If they tariff us, we will tariff them. If they use trade barriers to keep us out, we will do the same to them,” he said, reaffirming his administration’s stance on countering what he views as unfair trade practices.

He also mentioned that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had been informed that India would not be exempt from these new tariffs. “Nobody can argue with me on this,” Trump asserted.

International Backlash Over Trade Policy

Trump’s decision comes after his administration imposed sweeping tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China, citing concerns such as illegal immigration and drug trafficking. The move has already drawn strong criticism from global leaders.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Trump of trying to harm Canada’s economy, claiming the US was targeting its allies while “appeasing” Russia amid the Ukraine conflict.

With the new tariffs set to take effect, the US faces growing diplomatic tensions, as trading partners prepare to respond with countermeasures.
