The Trump administration has recently fired hundreds of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) employees following a fatal mid-air collision at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in January. The firings occurred on a busy air travel weekend.
According to David Spero, president of the Professional Aviation Safety Specialists (PASS) union, the affected employees, primarily those in their probationary period, were notified of their termination via email late Friday. The employees who were fired include systems specialists, safety inspectors, maintenance mechanics, and administrative staff. Additionally, among those dismissed were personnel responsible for FAA radar, landing gear, and navigational aid maintenance.
Spero criticized the move, stating that the firings were “shameful” and would place additional strain on an already stretched workforce. He also noted that the termination notifications appeared to originate from an unofficial email address14. The firings have been described as part of a cost-cutting drive by the Trump administration.
The FAA is currently facing a shortage of air traffic controllers, and there have been ongoing concerns about an overtaxed and understaffed air traffic control system.
