Ethiopia: Uganda has confirmed three new cases of Ebola, raising the total number of infections to 12 since the outbreak began in late January, the African Union’s health agency reported on Thursday.
While Ugandan authorities had previously declared the outbreak contained in mid-February, the Africa CDC, based in Ethiopia, revealed the emergence of a new cluster with three confirmed cases and two probable ones.
A total of 69 individuals have been identified as contacts and are currently under monitoring, CDC chief of staff Ngashi Ngongo informed reporters.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reported the death of the latest victim on Saturday—a four-year-old boy who passed away last week at Uganda’s national referral hospital, Mulago. WHO has also classified the boy’s mother and sibling as probable Ebola cases.
The mother, who had given birth just days before, succumbed to an acute illness on February 6, while the newborn died on February 12. WHO noted that no laboratory tests were conducted following their deaths, and both were buried accordingly.
