US Tariffs on Canada and Mexico Set for Tuesday but Rate Remains Uncertain

The United States will impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico starting Tuesday, but the final rate has yet to be determined, according to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.

Lutnick stated on Sunday that while tariffs will take effect, the administration is still deciding whether to enforce the full 25% rate initially proposed. “That is a fluid situation,” he told Fox News. “There are going to be tariffs on Tuesday on Mexico and Canada. Exactly what they are, we’re going to leave that for the president and his team to negotiate.”

This marks the first indication that the administration may adjust its stance on the tariffs, which were initially planned to target all Mexican goods and non-energy imports from Canada. Lutnick acknowledged that both nations have made efforts to secure their borders but claimed that fentanyl continues to be a problem in the US.

Adding to the uncertainty, Trump had previously mentioned a possible April 2 deadline regarding the tariffs but later confirmed the Tuesday implementation. He also announced that an additional 10% tariff would be imposed on Chinese goods on the same day, doubling the 10% duties set on February 4.

Lutnick confirmed that tariffs on China would proceed unless the country takes action to stop fentanyl trafficking into the US.
