Brought in handcuffs and shackles
A man deported from the US tells his story
The second batch of Indians deported from the US also reached Amritsar airport on Saturday. One of these people, Daljit Singh, said that this time too he was handcuffed. Apart from this, chains were also put on his feet. Let us tell you that when 104 Indians were deported for the first time, the pictures that came out had given a strong reaction from the people on social media. People said that deportation is right but they should be treated humanely. He has not committed any other crime apart from illegal immigration.
“We had chains on our feet and handcuffs on our hands,” Daljit Singh told reporters in Hoshiarpur. Singh, a resident of Kurala Kalan village in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district, was one of 116 illegal Indian immigrants who were brought to Amritsar airport on a US plane on Saturday night. In response to a question, Singh said he was taken to the US through “donkey” (illegal) routes.
The ‘donkey’ route is an illegal and risky route used by immigrants to enter the US. Singh’s wife, Kamalpreet Kaur, alleged that her husband was cheated by a ‘travel agent’. She said that the ‘travel agent’ had promised to take Singh to the US via a direct flight but instead took him through an illegal route.
Kamalpreet said that a person from his village had arranged a ‘travel agent’ for Singh’s journey. He said that the agent had assured him of taking him to the US legally but later when he was taken to several places, he started doubting the legality of the journey. A plane carrying 116 illegal immigrants from the US landed at the Amritsar International Airport late on Saturday night. Official sources said that the plane landed at the airport at 11.35 pm instead of the expected time of 10 pm.
This is the second batch of Indians to be deported since February 5 as part of the crackdown on illegal immigration by the US President Donald Trump-led administration. Of these, some belonging to Punjab were taken to their homes in police vehicles around 4.30 am on Sunday after immigration and background checks. The Haryana government also arranged transportation for those deported from the state.
